Description

This webinar will focus specifically on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in public health practice. Through interactive activities, webinar participants and facilitators will identify benefits and opportunities of leveraging AI in public health, along with risk mitigation strategies.

Examples of AI "pillars" and guidelines will be shared for webinar participants to consider for implementation in their own public health units/organizations.

About Dr. Malkin

Dr. Itai Malkin is one of the Medical Officers of Health for Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services Public Health. He leads the Environmental Public Health and Public Health Emergency Management portfolios. Additionally, given the newer provincial structure, opportunities to develop provincial protocols and guidelines (such as for generative AI use) continue to arise.

He completed his BSc at Western University, MD at the University of Ottawa, MSc at the  London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and both CCFP and FRCPC at McMaster University.

Itai holds assistant or adjunct professor positions at McMaster’s Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact, and Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine, and sits on the national advisory board for the National Collaborating Centre for Methods and Tools.

About Dr. May

Dr. Curtis May is a Medical Health Officer with the Fraser Health Authority in British Columbia. There, he holds the Wellness (health promotion) portfolio. He started his role at Fraser Health in late 2025, and through observations of how AI was used in public health he quickly developed an interest to help educate himself and other public health staff on the proper use of AI in public health practice.
