Suicide is a major public health issue in Canada, with recent data showing that 12 people are lost each day to suicide with an additional 7 to 10 people profoundly affected by this loss. In this webinar, you will learn:
- How Niagara Region Public Health has been addressing suicide prevention
- About a Toolkit for community agencies to implement the Zero Suicide initiative created with St. Joseph’s Healthcare in London, Ontario
- How public health units across Ontario can play a role in creating suicide-safer communities

- Discuss how a local public health unit has been addressing suicide prevention
- Recognize how the Toolkit can be applied to support community agencies to implement Zero Suicide
- Describe how public health units can play a role in creating a suicide-safer community
Presenter(s): Stephanie Hicks and Shauna Graf
Stephanie Hicks, BA, is a Health Promoter with Niagara Region Public Health, with over 15 years of health promotion experience, and has been working in suicide prevention since 2019. Prior to this role, she spent 10 years working in tobacco cessation, and two years in primary care engagement. Stephanie is a certified SafeTalk and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) trainer, and is co-chair of the Niagara Suicide Prevention Coalition.
Shauna Graf, RN, BScN, CPMHN(C), Shauna Graf graduated from Western University in 2013. She has nine years of nursing experience at St. Joseph’s Health Care in London, Ontario, including previous roles in the Veteran’s Care Program, Adolescent Inpatient, and Adult Ambulatory Mental Health Care Programs. Shauna has a passion for promoting mental health and suicide prevention through providing direct patient care, knowledge translation/staff education, and advocacy for quality improvement at a leadership level. Her current role is a Project Lead with the Quality, Strategy and Innovation Team at St. Joseph’s, recently leading the “Zero Suicide” initiative, implementing best practices in suicide prevention within St. Joseph’s, the local community, and beyond.
