Neonatal sepsis, which refers to an infection involving the bloodstream in newborn infants less than 28 days old, is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among infants. Researchers conducted a prospective cohort study of hospitalized neonates in Botswana to assess the epidemiology and microbiology of sepsis in hospitalized neonates in a low-and-middle-income country (LMIC). Their analyses included assessing environmental and human carriage of pathogenic organisms as well as use of genetic epidemiology to assess outbreaks. This presentation will discuss the impact of neonatal sepsis, the microbiology of these infections, and prevention strategies in LMIC settings.
Intended audience: Public health physicians and nurses, public health unit staff working in infection prevention and control (IPAC), laboratory staff, clinical and medical microbiologists, infectious disease physicians.

Presenter(s): Dr. Susan Coffin, MD, MPH
Dr. Coffin is a pediatric infectious diseases specialist who works at the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She has served as a healthcare epidemiologist for several decades and her research is focused on infection prevention and control, and neonatal sepsis in low and middle income countries.
