Global Health Diplomacy Discussion Panel

This lecture is organized by the Centre for Global Health .You are able to attend virtually (a link will be sent the morning of the event).

As part of its Executive Course in Global Health Diplomacy, the Centre for Global Health will be welcoming learners from around the globe to learn about global health diplomacy and build their negotiation skills. The course will kick-off with a discussion panel featuring Ilona Kickbusch and discussants Joel Lexchin and Mark Brender, who will be exploring how countries engage in global health diplomacy on the world stage.

Following the panel discussion, a Meet & Greet with Ilona Kickbusch will be held in the 7th floor lounge at 155 College St.

Title: How do countries engage in global health diplomacy? Perspectives from academia and civil society

Dr. Ilona Kickbusch, Health Consult advises international organizations, national governments, NGOs and the private sector on new directions and innovations in global health, pandemic preparedness, governance for health and health promotion. Professor Ilona Kickbusch PhD is known throughout the world for her expertise and is a sought-after senior adviser and key note speaker. She has a strong commitment to the empowerment of women. She is the founding director and chair of the Global Health Centre at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. She has been appointed a senior distinguished fellow at the Graduate Institute. She has had a distinguished career with the World Health Organization and Yale University. She holds an honorary professorship at the Charité, Berlin.

Dr. Joel Lexchin, is a professor emeritus at the York University Faculty of Health where he taught about pharmaceutical policy, an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, an emergency physician at the Toronto General Hospital and a Fellow in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.[1][2][3] He is the author or co-author of over 140 peer-reviewed papers on a wide range of topics in this area, including: drug regulation, pharmacosurveillance, drug promotion, research and development, access to medications in developing countries and physician prescribing behaviour. He has been a consultant on these and other issues to the Ontario provincial government, various parts of the Canadian federal government, the government of New Zealand, the Australian National Prescribing Service and the World Health Organization.

Mark Brender, is the National Director of Partners in Health (PIH) Canada. Mark led the establishment of PIH Canada in 2011 to strengthen the work of PIH globally and add PIH’s voice to the Canadian movement for health as a human right. He is a non-profit director and communications specialist with strong fundraising experience and track record as empowering team-builder.
