About this Event

This session will provide recent scientific evidence of climate change risks to the health of Canadians and their health systems and discuss the actions Health Canada is taking to support public health officials in their efforts to prepare for a warming climate.

Schedule:

1:00 – 2:00 pm - Presentation

2:00-3:30 pm - Discussion and Input

Irrespective of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, warming of the climate will continue in the near term increasing health risks to individuals, communities and health systems in Canada. Health authorities in Canada are taking actions to prepare for climate change. Several have undertaken climate change and health vulnerability and adaptation assessments (e.g., Simcoe-Muskoka Health Unit, Middlesex-London Health Unit) and the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care has developed a tool that health facility officials can use to assess their resiliency to climate change impacts. The Climate Change and Innovation Bureau at Health Canada launched the HealthADAPT initiative to build climate change and health capacity across the country and is leading the next national climate change and health assessment “Health of Canadians in a Changing Climate” to be released in 2021. This session will provide recent scientific evidence of climate change risks to the health of Canadians and their health systems and discuss the actions Health Canada is taking to support public health officials in their efforts to prepare for a warming climate. Students will have the opportunity to provide their input on Health Canada’s efforts to communicate the health risks of climate change to support needed adaptations.
