Title: Exploring COVID-19 cases and outbreaks by industry
This seminar will explore the challenges and opportunities of using COVID-19 case and outbreak data to understand the burden of disease in various settings, occupations, and industries. Participants will learn about Ontario’s reportable disease data and how they have been used to date, including an analysis estimating the incidence of outbreak-associated cases of COVID-19 by industry.
Presenter: Sarah Buchan
Sarah Buchan is a Scientist at Public Health Ontario (PHO) in Health Protection where she conducts applied public health research related to the epidemiology of vaccine-preventable and other infectious diseases. Her interests include studying the burden of respiratory viruses in high-risk populations, assessing vaccine effectiveness, and estimating vaccine coverage. She has been supporting PHO’s COVID-19 Incident Management System since February 2020 with a focus on addressing questions to support the provincial response and inform decision-making. She has also contributed to analyses related to COVID-19 burden, transmission, variants of concern, and immunization.
The Occupational and Environmental Health Seminar Series is a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The series is also approved by Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI), and by the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists (CRBOH) for Registration Maintenance (RM) points.
