Enhancing Engagement: Advanced skills in virtual home visiting

Public Health Ontario (PHO) is hosting a series of webinars led by the Public Health Nursing Practice, Research & Education Program (PHN-PREP) to provide information to public health nurses involved with home visiting. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, public health home visitation programs rapidly transitioned to providing services to pregnant individuals and families with young children through a hybrid of in-person and virtual (videoconference) visits. While public health professionals have now established the basic skills in scheduling and facilitating a virtual visit, challenges remain. Virtual care has left clinicians feeling disconnected to clients. In this webinar, strategies for developing advanced skills in engaging clients during virtual visits, including tips for conducting complex health or developmental assessments, will be reviewed.

Intended audience: Public health nurses and supervisors working in the Healthy Babies Healthy Children or the Nurse-Family Partnership programs

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify three strategies for engaging clients during virtual visits to enhance the clinician-client relationship.
  2. Describe clear expectations (to clients) on “what to expect” during a virtual visit.
  3. Apply different approaches to engage clients, including their infants or children, during virtual visits to simulate “side-by-side” or “floor-time” experiences with families.
  4. Discuss strategies for enhancing the completion of developmental assessments during a virtual visit.
