This is the first session of a four-part series of interactive learning exchanges focused on the shelter outbreak response to COVID-19. Congregate Living Settings (CLS), including shelters, are at a higher risk of COVID-19 transmission. Shelters are often crowded and serve transient populations, posing challenges in implementing public health measures, such as physical distancing, isolation, testing and immunization, that are important in preventing COVID-19 outbreaks. The COVID-19 pandemic has also exposed the unique challenges that shelters face in responding to COVID-19 outbreaks, underscoring the need for innovative prevention and management strategies. This session will focus on vaccination strategies and will include speakers from Toronto Public Health and Hamilton Public Health. PHO is collaborating with six public health units (Toronto, Hamilton, Sudbury, Waterloo, Peterborough and Thunder Bay) as part of the series to facilitate a discussion about their local experience, key strategies, and lessons on managing COVID-19 outbreaks in shelters.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
