PHO Rounds: COVID-19 Vaccine Program Surveillance - Part One: Vaccine Safety Surveillance

This is the first session of a two-part series of presentations on COVID-19 vaccine program surveillance. 
This session will provide an overview of Ontario’s COVID-19 vaccine program surveillance framework, followed by a detailed look at the systems that monitor COVID-19 vaccine safety. An overview of results from both active and passive Ontario vaccine safety systems will be provided.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe Ontario’s COVID-19 vaccine program surveillance framework.
  2. Recognize the systems in place for COVID-19 vaccine safety surveillance.
  3. Describe recent findings from both active and passive surveillance systems that are monitoring COVID-19 vaccine safety in Ontario.

Presenter(s): Dr. Sarah Wilson, Whitley Meyer and Dr. Matthew Muller

Dr. Sarah Wilson is a Public Health Physician and the co-lead of the COVID-19 vaccine section of Public Health Ontario’s Incident Management System (IMS) structure for its pandemic response.  

Whitley Meyer is the Team Lead of the COVID-19 vaccine section of Public Health Ontario’s Incident Management System (IMS) structure for its pandemic response. Prior to COVID-19, Whitley was a nurse consultant supporting vaccine safety surveillance at Public Health Ontario.

Dr. Matthew Muller is an Infectious Disease Physician and the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control at St. Michael’s Hospital. He is the Ontario Principal Investigator for the Canadian National Vaccine Safety (CANVAS) Network.

Public Health Ontario Rounds are a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). In order to receive written documentation for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, please check “Yes” beside the question “Do you require CME credits?” on the registration form.

College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Affiliate Members may count RCPSC credits toward their Mainpro+ credit requirements. All other CFPC members may claim up to 50 Certified credits per cycle for participation in RCPSC MOC Section 1 accredited activities.

PHO Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
