Grassroots Response to Large-Scale Crisis: The Case of COVID-19 Resources Canada, CanCOVID and REAL

Description

Worldwide crises, like the COVID-19 pandemic, demand agile, large-scale responses and system-wide transformations driven by scientific and social innovations. However, these transformations can be significantly delayed and limited by the challenges of policy and need for immediate technological advancements. Frustrated by the slow pace of government response to the pandemic in various locations, many scientists looked to leverage their experience with radical transformation at technological, societal, and policy levels. This led to the development of needs-driven, agile and evidence-based grassroots initiatives that tried to fill the voids left by rigid governmental frameworks.

In this panel, we discuss 3 successful grassroots initiatives in their response to the Canadian COVID-19 epidemic: COVID-19 Resources Canada, CanCOVID and REAL. The different teams assembled to provide reliable sources of information and expertise for COVID-19 research in Canada and the public; collaboration between researchers, physicians and patient advocates and volunteer deployment.
