About this Event

The Institute for Pandemics at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto was recently formed in order to tackle some of the most pressing issues associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, and to understand how to prevent future pandemics. A central goal of The Institute is to address issues of health equity associated with pandemics. In the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become apparent that there are stark racial inequities in the odds of testing positive for COVID-19, and of suffering the worst outcomes associated with the disease.

The inaugural lecture of the Institute for Pandemics Lecture Series on Health Equity will focus on racial health inequities in COVID-19 outcomes and highlight the empirical evidence that has been accumulated thus far, while exploring how advocates and policymakers are taking up the evidence in real time. This panel will explore this evidence and examine its implications for using policy and other strategies to dismantle structural racism.

Panelists will explore some of the following issues:

• What are the ‘fundamental causes’ of racial inequities in COVID-19 and how is structural racism implicated?

• What insights can we glean from the similarities in racial inequities in Canada and the U.S.?

• What are the issues with collecting race-based data, and what can we do to make sure this data, and the communities it is collected from, are protected?
