Overcoming the Digital Divide: Enhancing Equity in the Health System

  • 23 Sep 2020
  • 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
  • Webinar

This lecture is co-presented by Women's College Hospital Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care (WIHV) and the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics (JCB) and is part of the JCB Bioethics Seminar Series.

Last year, WIHV and JCB hosted an invitational symposium with clinicians, policymakers, health care leaders, researchers, technology vendors, and community members with an interest and expertise in digital health and equity. This lecture will present the findings of the follow-up paper "Digital Health Technologies for More Equitable Health Systems: A Discussion Paper" and will outline the most important themes of discussion and present action items for the Government of Ontario that will promote health equity as digital tools become more prominent in the province’s health care system.

This webinar will cover:

  • the importance of a health equity and social justice perspective on digital health and virtual care in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • a summary of the recently published report, “Digital Health Technologies for More Equitable Health Systems: A Discussion Paper”, authored by team members at Women’s College Hospital Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care, and the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics
  • a description of the framework used to guide a health equity analysis of a large-scale virtual care initiative at Women’s College Hospital
  • experiences of implementing and using virtual care in community-based primary health care settings in Ontario
  • immediate action items for policy and leadership
